چکیده

What is “Formal Epistemology”? Not sure, really. I first heard the term from Sahotra Sarkar in 2003 . It seems that it is quite a broad field, which includes: Ampliative inference (including inductive logic); Game theory and decision theory; Formal learning theory; Formal theories of coherence: Foundations of probability and statistics; Formal approaches to paradoxes of belief and/or action; Belief revision theory; Causal modeling, causal discovery, causal learning. I guess I think of it (nowadays) in even broader terms: Analytic (Western) philosophy which makes serious use of (or does serious philosophy about) formal methods and is not analytic metaphysics. Or, perhaps more concisely: “Core”, non-metaphysics, involving formal methods. I want it to be an area (not called “logic”!), where logic and other formal methods are used, and non-apologetically!

Formal Representations of Belief

Epistemology is the study of knowledge and justified belief. Belief is thus central to epistemology. It comes in a qualitative form, as when Sophia believes that Vienna is the capital of Austria, and a quantitative form, as when Sophia's degree of belief that Vienna is the capital of Austria is at least twice her degree of belief that tomorrow it will be sunny in Vienna. Formal epistemology, as...

A short introduction to two approaches in formal verification of security protocols: model checking and theorem proving

In this paper, we shortly review two formal approaches in verification of security protocols; model checking and theorem proving. Model checking is based on studying the behavior of protocols via generating all different behaviors of a protocol and checking whether the desired goals are satisfied in all instances or not. We investigate Scyther operational semantics as n example of this...

Element of justification in contemporary epistemology

The definition of propositional knowledge has been said to be: "knowledge is belief in justified truth" and belief, truth, and justified are necessary and adequate conditions in the actualization of knowledge.  Many faults have been directed towards this three elemental definition, which some of them have been derived from the element of justification. This article reviews some of the most im...
